Priya Murle is a “Bharatanatyam” (an ancient South Indian classical dance form) dancer of exceptional caliber who has been in the scene of the South Indian classical dance – Bharatanatyam over three decades.
She began her dancing career at a very young age and trained under the dancing legend Ms. Sudharani Raghupathy. Over the years she has given numerous performances both in India and abroad. She is not only an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer but also a research scholar, choreographer, mentor and trainer who has a deep interest in Music, Nattuvangam and Sanskrit. She has been associated with Sree Bharatalaya (a dance academy founded by Ms. Sudharani Raghupathy) as a faculty member where she has been involved in training young dancers besides being a part of the team there that brought out a Handbook on Bharatanatyam titled Laghu Bharatham in three volumes.
She is also the recipient of numerous titles and awards in recognition of her contribution to Bharatanatyam dance and excellence in this field of art. While she has given many memorable performances in the last three decades of her dancing career her performance of Amba – Shikhandi (A tale of cross gender revenge) from the famous Hindu epic “The Mahabharat” has been one the many notable performances. In fact I have posted four pictures from this dance in my earlier album – “EPIC Women”.
It was an exhilarating experience for me to watch the Bharatanatyam dance performance by Priya Murle and an equally exhilarating experience to photograph her performance on stage on November 28, 2012.
Enjoy the pictures.
