Life in Araku valley especially for the women folk is not easy. They endure no electricity on the line, no piped water supply, no proper sanitation, no proper housing etc. In so far as water supply is concerned this has to be fetched from the nearest fresh water stream or well. This task falls on the women folks of the village. So every morning you can see the women of the village carrying several metal pots to the water source be it a stream or a well to wash their utensils, clothes and fill up the water in the pots and carry these deftly balanced on their heads to their home. This is a daily ritual once or twice a day. This is also a cooperative effort as the filled up pot has to be loaded on her head by her friend. Each of the women help each other cheerfully fully realizing that without one another's help this activity cannot be completed.
We had the opportunity to witness this scene one fine morning. Even little girls happily join in this task to help their mothers. You will observe that in many of the pictures each woman carries three pots and the total weight is estimated to be at least 18 kgs. Not a small weight which has to be deftly balanced and reached home without spilling.
