Kovalam is a fishing village in Chennai, India about 40 kms South of Chennai, on the East Coast Road en route to Mahabalipuram. Kovalam was a port town developed by the Nawab of Carnatic, Saadat Ali. It was taken over by the French in 1746, and destroyed by the British in 1752.
The Dutch built a fort there during the colonial times, which today has been made the Taj Fisherman's Cove, a private luxury beach resort. An ancient Catholic church on the beach is another attraction.
Of late mid sea diving and wind surfing have become popular sports on the sea cost along this beach. In fact recently in the month of September 2015, the annual music and surfing festival was conducted here on this beach drawing a huge crowd of beach sports enthusiasts.
